What is Proscar (finasteride)?

Proscar (finasteride) is a drug with anti-androgenic effect. It is used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Proscar is highly effective in lowering the levels of DHT in the body and within the prostate.

The absorption of finasteride from the gastrointestinal tract ends in 6-8 hours after administration. Diet and lifestyle do not have a significant effect on the rate and extent of drug absorption.

When should I use Proscar (finasteride)?

Proscar (finasteride) is prescribed for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, for the prevention of urological complications (to reduce the risk of acute urinary retention, improve urine flow, and reduce the size of prostate gland). Thus, Proscar helps in size reduction of enlarged prostate, improves urine flow and reduces symptoms associated with BPH.

When should I NOT use Proscar (finasteride)?

The main contraindications include: hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. Proscar should be used with care in patients with chronic urinary retention or anuria.

Women and children should not take Proscar tablets. Women of childbearing age and pregnant women should avoid contact with crushed Proscar tablets (finasteride increases the health risk for the unborn baby). Finasteride can cause some abnormalities of external male genital organs.

Small amounts of finasteride can also be found in semen samples of patients receiving Proscar.

How should I use Proscar (finasteride)?

Proscar (finasteride) tablets are taken regardless of meals. The drug may be used as monotherapy or in combination therapy with doxazosin. The daily dose is 1 tablet (5 mg) in 1 reception. The dose should not be changed in renal failure of different severity, as well as in older patients. However, pharmacokinetic studies indicate that the elimination of finasteride in patients older than 70 years may be reduced.

Proscar therapy brings significant improvements in health, however, treatment may last at least six months.

What should I know about Proscar (finasteride) side effects?

Proscar (finasteride) therapy is well tolerated and relatively safe. The following disorders can occur in some patients during the first year of treatment: impotence, decreased libido, ejaculation disorder. As a rule, with continued administration of finasteride, some of these effects become milder. Possible side effects:

Endocrine system: tenderness and breast enlargement.

Reproductive system: decrease in semen volume, decreased libido, impotence, testicular pain, ejaculation disorders.

Allergic reactions: rash, hives, itching, swelling around the eyes and lips.

The duration of therapy does not affect the incidence and severity of side effects. The number of cases of sexual function disorders associated with taking Proscar decreases in long-term treated patients.

What about Proscar (finasteride) special instructions?

Patients will have to examine their prostate (called a digital rectal exam) before starting the treatment course and during Proscar therapy. Finasteride leads to a lower level of PSA in the serum in patients with BPH taking Proscar (this does not exclude the development of prostate cancer). No clinical improvement observed in patients with prostate cancer during the treatment with finasteride.

Proscar has not been found to have clinically significant drug interactions with other medications.

Hi. I am a 65 years old man who have had a radical prostatectomy about 4 years ago. as soon as I have done it, my PSA levels has dropped down to zero or at least near to zero. A couple of years ago it has risen to 1.3 and at this point my urologist gave me 5 mg of proscar to take 2 times per day as well as 125 mg of flutamide to take 3 times per day (breakfast, lunch, dinner). However, some time later my PSA levels started to rise again so at this point my doc raised up my flutamide dosage, he has been doubled up to 250 mg also 3 times per day. I have to take them the same way as I have been taking them in the past, only the dosage is bigger now. 2 times bigger. Anyway, I have been like this for the last few years and everything seems fine. in fact, I do experienced a couple of side effects like for example osteoporosis, gynecomastia, hot flushes as well as some compression factures, however for me this is well worth it due to the fact that these 2 drugs combined together has done a very and very good job in keeping my cancer away from me. I guess this is a price that each one of us would pay. By the way, not so long ago medicare started to refuse to cover the price for more than 5 mg of proscar a day, however, after lots of trying, I have been finally able to get this exception for me and I am currently back the regular proscar dosage that I have usually been. Without it I doubt that things would be the same. I am very thankful to this drug so I can recommend it.

It has done what it was expected that it is going to do with both side effects and the good effects that it should do. I mean, it reduced the libido but it was a good trade off for me because the alternative was not being able to urinate. It has helped me by reducing the PSA level from 13.0 to even less than 1.0 and besides that it also reduced the size of my prostate. I have had a prostate biopsy completed (without picnic) but that did ruled out that I have had BPH and not prostate cancer.

I am a 57 years old male that it is using Proscar and found it pretty effective in dropping down the PSA levels (from 4 to 1). Besides, I also found it effective in making the prostate smaller. But, all of that not without side effects…. I have got swollen breasts and tender nipples as well. But, this is not my biggest problem. what completely smashed my ego was the complete loss of morning erections, the very big lack of sex drive and a very big lack of semen discharge as well. All of this got to the point when I was thinking if this is worth it. I know that there are a lot of people having the exactly same effects I have on this drug which seems very common for lots of men. I have seen this online while reading reviews like the one I am now writing and I have also discussed with my doctor about this. he recommended to change to uroxatral (Alfuzosin) and that’s what I have done. drug works, no doubts: my erections are back to fine, my morning erections are there and I also can feel the sexual desire boost. However, once again… not without side effects. the latest PSA that I have had showed 8.0 but even so, the latest doctor’s finger test is saying that my prostate it is not swollen which is very and very good (I was nearly sure that it would be when I was in process of the test). Now, the doctor said that biopsy is what awaits me soon, he said that this would help me to determine what it is happening and what we should do next. Really hope that everything is going to be fine. as for this drug… seems that everybody is having the exact same effects…

What I am sure about is that this medication called Proscar needs to be banned from marked and kept away from human beings usages. I honestly don’t understand why doctors keep prescribing them. now, I am not talking anymore to the doctor who has prescribed it to me. for reasons. The side effects are unbearable, let’s start with the ED I have. before using it there was nothing I could complain about but now… my penis is not mine anymore. I am having extremely low to no sex drive at all. besides that. I am having a burning feeling while I am urinating. Very annoying and painful and it is all getting even worse because I have to feel it very often due to the fact that I have frequent trips to bathroom all day and all night. It is unstoppable and unbearable. I am not talking to my doctor anymore because I got no warnings from him about none of these side effects. I have been on this drug for 4 months and those were 4 months of hell. I have quit using it 20 days ago and about 90 to 95 % of those side effects are gone, but I am still having some and not sure if they would disappear. Really hope so and I really hope that somebody out there would see my review and would avoid this drug. It is not worth using it! believe me. I just want to help. if you want to go with 4 months of hell as I did then this drug is designed for you!

I have been given a prescription for this medication for an enlarged prostate that I have been diagnosed by my urologist. Got the prescription from the same doctor that diagnosed me with enlarged prostate. I was having some issues to get up a lot of times during one night in order to empty my bladder and I am talking about minimum 10 times during only one night. Before I have started to use this medication I started to look more and more closely at what exactly was in my food that I am going to eat. Well, for example, apple sauce – the chucky kind it is having lemon juice in it that is why I have completely stopped to eat apple sauce at all. I was suspecting and seriously thinking that in fact my bladder was the one that was issued more than my prostate. I then started to cut back on ice cream until I didn’t ate it at all as well as some fruits that I knew for sure that they are irritating my urinary system. I have never taken the proscar and I am already having a much better stream which leads to a much better sleep during the night without that disturbing urgency that I have been used to have while I was getting up 2 times per night. I have also tried to help to calm the prostate by adding Prostate Revive and it seem to help. The only recommendation I am having is to take a better look at the ingredients of the foods that you are about to eat as well as what ingredients is having your drink too. you need to forget about those things that are causing you damage and the first thing that you need to forget about is alcohol. But there are also other things. just try to listen to your body and see what it is saying, what it is helping you and what it is harming you. this would help. be sure!

Well, personally for me this drug is extremely beneficial. It has worked very and very well while it had and has little to no side effects at all (even if there were some side effects, I one don’t know about them). I have used Proscar for nearly 17 years now and glad that I have done it. I am have much more hair and it is thicker all over my head and this can easily be spotted. Even when looking at photos and comparing them and now you can see it. Receding hairline loss has completely stopped and that’s awesome. Now, it has been working so good for so much time that now, I’m sincerely pretty afraid to stop taking it and I’m not sure when I’m going to do it. When I started to use this drug I was told that this small dosage that is made to help me with my hair also can have a positive effect on my aging prostate. That’s not a sure thing but why wouldn’t I take it? it might be beneficial for my aging prostate and for my hair loss. I’m using a Proscar pill and I’m cutting it in 1/4 in order to make up the proper dosage for the hair loss and as I said – this does help me. very happy with the effects I’m getting!

I am 55 years old male who has been given Proscar (prescribed) in order to reduce my prostate. I am not taking it anymore and surely I won’t be taking it for nothing in this world. I was using this horrific medicine for about half a year or so (approximately 6-7 months) when then I was noticing that I am having a very little reduction in my prostate while in the same time I am having an extremely big reduction in my sex drive, besides this there’s a big number of other side effects such as: reduced amount of semen, great inability to maintain an erection during the sexual intercourse, my penis was shrinking and in the end I was getting enlarged and tender breasts more and more. what a hell medication. Nothing fun about it, that’s for sure. If I would knew that such things are awaiting for me then I would definitely wouldn’t use it. as soon as I understood that all these things are happening because of the drug I quit taking it immediately. I am now hoping that I would be regaining my manhood again, I haven’t been feeling so low ever in my life. what pisses me off completely is that all my doctors have mentioned that I have big chances of growing hair as a side effect but none of those so called doctors didn’t remembered to mention other side effects. most important side effect for a man – hair growth. F**K this thing!

The drug is wonderful and it really works but I just came here to let you know about my situation hoping that it would prepare you and would help you by knowing a little bit more about it. so, my use of this medicine proscar followed in much less (but I need to mention that not in absolute total elimination) of the terrible urgency I have had of urination. This effect set it in less than a couple of weeks after I have started to use it. this was a couple of years ago. I am now on the medication for those few years since I started the treatment. I was also suffering from dribbling after I was urinating and this was completely eliminated in those few weeks for all these years I’ve been on the drug until the recent past weeks. Throughout the entire time of using the drug my PSA test results have been the same – at low level of only 0.2. a very good thing that I was very afraid of before starting to use it is that I had no reduction at all in my sex drive and neither in my ability to achieve hard erections and to maintain them throughout the entire process. What I need to mention is that there was (and there still is) a pretty noticeable reduction in the amount of my semen when having the orgasm (compared to the amount of how much it used to be before using the drug). I’ve discussed about this with my doctor who said that this isn’t a problem. besides this side effect there were no other noticed. Since the effects of this drug started to set in until a couple of week ago this drug seemed perfect as it really was doing its job and I had no side effects, however, now after a couple of years of taking it, there are some symptoms that are slowly coming back. The symptoms are that I am much often starting and stopping to urinate, I know that my bladder is not fully emptying anymore as well as I also start to have some dribbling after I am urinating. I can feel that I have a need to hardly push the urine out more and more in order to completely empty the bladder compared to how it was in the earlier usage of this medicine. Currently I’m 68 years old and I am now trying to figure it out how I should stop the symptoms severity to kick in. I have an appointment with my doctor the next week and I would let him know everything. I’m thinking about 2 causes that might be responsible for this: I am aging or/and I am building tolerance to the drug. Also, I think that there are possibly 2 solutions for this: I’m either raising up my dosage on this drug or my doctor should prescribe me another one. I don’t know but I think that he would raise my dosage, I’m just a little bit afraid of the side effects…
