What is Xalatan?

Xalatan (latanoprost) is a long-acting anti-glaucoma drug that has a moderate hypotensive effect.

Xalatan is prescribed to lower high intraocular pressure in individuals with open-angle glaucoma or high ophthalmotonus values. The drug normalizes intraocular pressure, but it must be used regularly.

Latanoprost is easily absorbed through the cornea. It increases outflow of intraocular fluid and helps reduce increased intraocular pressure.

Xalatan contraindications

Xalatan (latanoprost) is contraindicated in the following cases: age up to 1 year, hypersensitivity to the components of the drug. Pregnant women can use the drug only after consulting a doctor (no adequate and well-controlled studies). Xalatan can cause fever and nasopharyngitis in children.

Xalatan should be used with caution in the presence of the following diseases: aphakia, macular edema, uveitis, iritis, neovascular glaucoma (insufficient data on the safety and efficacy of the drug), bronchial asthma, herpetic keratitis, lactation period.

Xalatan therapy is not recommended in patients with herpetic keratitis (recurrent or active form).

Xalatan is prescribed only for adults, since the efficacy of this drug in children has not been established. It is used as a component of combined therapy, as well as in the form of monotherapy.

How to use Xalatan

Xalatan eye drops should be instilled in the affected eye (preferably in the evening). Use 1 drop 1 time per day (for all age groups of patients).

Patients should be observed regularly (for 2-3 weeks) in order to exclude the paradoxical effect of the drug. All patients with glaucoma should monitor the effectiveness of treatment in the future. Patients should periodically change their drugs for the treatment of glaucoma in order to prevent drug resistance.

Xalatan special instructions

Do not use high doses of Xalatan, because this can reduce the effect of therapy.

Xalatan can be used concomitantly with other ophthalmic drugs that help reduce intraocular pressure. If you use several drugs, then the interval should not be less than 5 minutes.

Xalatan ingredients can be absorbed by contact lenses. That is why they need to be removed before instillation. You can wear contact lenses again in 15 minutes.

Xalatan therapy can cause a slight change in eye color. Clinical studies have shown that such pigmentation is not accompanied by pathological changes or clinically pronounced symptoms.

Xalatan can cause gradual changes in hair and eyelashes (they can become thicker or longer). These changes are reversible: they will disappear after treatment is stopped.

Store Xalatan in a place protected from light, out of reach of children, at a temperature of 2-8° C.
