What do I need to know about Zestril?

Zestril (lisinopril) is a drug used to lower blood pressure. Lisinopril belongs to the group of antihypertensive drugs. This substance reduces arterial pressure and pressure in the pulmonary capillaries in patients with chronic heart failure and improves blood flow to the heart muscle. Long-term use of lisinopril can reduce arterial wall hypertrophy and improve blood supply. Lisinopril helps prolong life in patients suffering from chronic heart failure, as well as prevent the progression of left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction.

The total duration of the therapeutic effect is 24 hours. A stable effect is achieved after 1-2 months if lisinopril is used by patients with hypertension.

Zestril indications: various types of arterial hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, combination therapy for the early treatment of acute myocardial infarction and chronic heart failure.

What should I discuss with my doctor before taking Zestril?

Zestril therapy may be dangerous for some categories of patients. Do not take Zestril if you have hypersensitivity to ACE inhibitors (in particular to lisinopril). The drug is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Hereditary angioedema is also a reasonable excuse for refusing lisinopril. The drug should be used with caution in case of aortic stenosis, cardiac ischemia, cerebrovascular diseases, coronary insufficiency, diabetes, systemic diseases of connective tissue, hyperkalemia, kidney failure, arterial hypotension, primary aldosteronism.

The therapy should always be discussed with the doctor for elderly patients and people on a diet.

How should I take Zestril?

Take lisinopril once a day, preferably at the same time. Begin with 10 mg per day for essential hypertension. The dose can be increased up to 20 mg per day (maximum daily dose of 40 mg is allowed in extreme cases).

The full therapeutic effect can develop within 2-4 weeks after you’ve started the treatment. If the expected results were not achieved, then you should take other antihypertensive drugs.

Patients taking diuretics should reduce the daily dose of lisinopril up to 5 mg.

As for renal failure, the daily dose of lisinopril is set from 2.5 to 10 mg per day.

Persistent arterial hypertension: take 10-15 mg of lisinopril per day.

Chronic heart failure: start with 2.5 mg per day and increase to 5 mg after 3-5 days. The maintenance dose of lisinopril is 5-20 mg per day.

Acute myocardial infarction: complex therapy is recommended.

Diabetic nephropathy: start with 10-20 mg per day.

As far as i can remember myself, i had blood pressure issues. Since i was a kid i have been taking Zestril. Then i switched to Lisinopril, the generic medicine, and that was a mistake. Even if i cut down my insurance, i lost concentration, my knees started to burn, very weak reaction, almost hit a woman while driving, just didn't see her crossing the street - that's insane. I took lisinopril for 10 days only then switched back to Zestril, it's not the same thing, even if they say it's same active ingredient, bullshit, never had such issues with zestril. My blood pressure is back to normal and no crazy side effects. Will never exchange zestril with some other drug.
